Description:

Situated on the edge of the Amazon River and unparalleled ecosystem of the Amazon Jungle Leticia, is situated in the Southern-most part of Colombia where it borders Brazil and Peru. As such, Leticia is a border city, and is a fascinating fusion of people and cultures, making this the perfect destination to work and study. Here you can be directly involved in valuable work which helps to support the local community, bringing tourists and local people together. This ‘hands-on’ approach means that you are fully immersed in the culture and rapidly absorb the language. Local communities benefit in many ways and in turn, benefits to the volunteer are immeasurable. All volunteers are welcomed and their help is greatly appreciated by all who are involved, as a volunteer, you can guarantee will receive a very warm welcome. You can also be assured that a proportion of the fee you pay for your program will go directly to the program itself so that can improve in the future. This educational project is in a government institution, where all students are studying gastronomy and tourism. Volunteers assist in teaching English to adults and young students, and also assist in a number of other educational activities.

Activities:

The work of the volunteer may vary slightly according to the individual school but generally the work involves assisting students with their English conversational skills. As a volunteer, you will find that good creativity skills are a great asset as resources at the school are often very poor.

Some of your responsibilities of the above mentioned program:
  1. Teaching basic English
  2. Participating in or creating educational games/activities.
  3. Helping facilitate other classes (art, science, etc. depending on your Spanish level).

Requirements:

  • Commitment to 4 hours work per day.
  • Willingness to learn about a different culture and respect for cultural differences.
  • Motivation and enthusiasm for teaching.
  • Intermediate level of Spanish.
  • Intermediate-advanced level of English.
  • Patience, creativity, and professionalism.
  • Motivation, capability of working with little guidance and low technology.
  • Commitment to the project.

Minimum:

The minimum time requested for this volunteer program in Colombia is 4 weeks of which at least two weeks of Spanish course. The standard volunteer package consists of 2 weeks of Spanish classes followed by 2 weeks of volunteer work. You can also decide to combine your course and volunteer work and start working straight away, as classes are in the mornings, and your volunteer work will be in the afternoons.

Spanish:

An intermediate level of Spanish is required in order to participate in this project. You will first take (minimum) 2 weeks of Spanish course.
